Racecadotril is an antidiarrheal medication used to treat acute watery diarrhea in adults and children (over 3 months) by reducing water and electrolyte secretion in the intestines. It is a pro-drug converted to thiorphan, which acts as an enkephalinase inhibitor to reduce fluid loss without affecting intestinal motility.
General Properties and Specifications of Racecadotril:
Appearance: White to Almost white powder or crystals.
Assay: 99% minimum.
Melting Point: 89C literature. 72C-74C is also reported.
Solubility: Very low solubility in water. Highly soluble in Ethanol, DMSO, and DMF.
Storage: Room Temperature (Recommended in a cool and dark place, <15°C). Preferably refrigerate 2C to 8C. Short-term shipping may be ambient.

CHARACTERS
Appearance: White or almost white powder.
Solubility: Practically insoluble in water, freely soluble in methanol and in methylene chloride.
IDENTIFICATION
A. Infrared absorption spectrophotometry.
TESTS
Appearance of solution: The solution is clear and not more intensely coloured than reference solution.
Dissolve 5.0 g in 10 mL of acetone.
Related substances: To pass the test by Liquid chromatography.
Loss on drying: Maximum 0.5 per cent, determined on 1.000 g by drying in vacuo at 60C for 4 h.
Sulfated ash: Maximum 0.1 per cent, determined on 1.0 g.
